Shreve, Henry Miller
(21 oct. 1785, condado de Burlington, N.J., EE.UU.–6 mar. 1851, St. Louis, Mo.).

Inventor y explorador estadounidense. Creció en la frontera occidental de Pensilvania, y empezó a hacer viajes de comercio después de la muerte de su padre, en 1799. En la guerra anglo-estadounidense de 1812 era capitán del segundo barco de vapor del Mississippi, el Enterprise, en el que llevaba suministros al ejército de Andrew Jackson. Aunque fue el primer barco de vapor que llegó a Louisville, Ky., EE.UU. (1815), el viaje convenció a Shreve sobre la necesidad de un nuevo diseño para los vapores de río. Su diseño para el Washington –con un casco plano poco profundo, una máquina de vapor en la cubierta principal, y una segunda cubierta– estableció el modelo para el barco de vapor del Mississippi. Para despejar los ríos, eliminando los arrastres, más tarde diseñó el primer barco limpia-troncos. Su campamento en el río Rojo, en Luisiana, creció hasta convertirse en un asentamiento permanente bajo el nombre de Shreveport.
